It was already hyped as the most expensive sports event in history, with the teams having spent around $850 million to assemble the talent they had. And the teams in question--Manchester United and Manchester City--love each other as much as the Capulets love the Montagues.
The score was tied at 1-1 until the 78th minute when Wayne Rooney scored what could be the most beautiful goal in the world.
It's the kind of attempt that almost never works: an upside-down bicycle kick. Nine times out of ten they go over the top or wide. And this is Wayne Rooney the multimillionaire tabloid magnet; the maddening hero/goat of English soccer, coming off an ultra disappointing year at the World Cup. He has scored brilliant goals, but never one quite like this at a moment like this.
